3 Reasons You Should Have a Video C.V.

Video C.V’s are becoming more and more popular in the digital age, with everyone having access to a video camera in their pocket employers are looking to potential employees to be more creative with their C.V. and stand out. So why is a video C.V. so impressive? This article will look at 3 reasons you should make a video C.V. and why they will make you stand out from the crowd.

1. They’re personal.

A video C.V. is as personal as a C.V. can get; it puts you in a vulnerable position and allows the employer to see your mannerisms, your confidence and your passion. Use a video C.V. to show off your skills and your belief in yourself because that is what the employer is going to be looking for. Practice in the mirror to make sure you don’t look too nervous; rehearse what you are going to say until you know it off by heart so that you don’t have to do too many takes. It’s important that your video C.V. doesn’t include any mistakes because then it might come across to the employer as ‘sloppy’. Record it until you are satisfied that it is the best version of yourself you can put forward and then try to mimic that in your interview. Remember that it will be easier to see if you don’t have confidence in your skills or abilities than if you were to write a paper C.V. so always act confident. This may all sound like a lot of hard work, but the payoff is that your C.V. will stand out so much more than those who handed in written C.V’s and you are much more likely to make an impression on the employer which will then lead to an interview.

2. The employer can meet you without meeting you.

The main reason we have interviews after handing in C.V’s and covering letters is so the employer can meet us and decide if we are the right fit for their team. A video C.V. simplifies this process in that the employer already has an idea of what kind of personality and character you have from watching your video. This means all there really is left for the employer at this point is to ask you the interview questions and if you get those right remember they already liked your personality from your video C.V. so your chances of employment will be much greater. Your video C.V. should show your real personality as best as possible while still putting the best version of yourself forward because the employer will want to see the same person in the interview as they saw on your video, so bare that in mind when creating it.

3. They can be creative and expressive.

Video C.V’s don’t have to just be videos of you reading out your skills and strengths to a camera. They can be fun and interesting, too. Try and look at video editing software and think of ways to make it fun while still keeping it professional. Use the video to show off your creative skills in art or show an example of you taking initiative. Remember to always keep the video as professional as you can but still remember to have fun with it. Try to strike a balance between these two and you’ll have a video that not only impresses your employer but shows you are fun, interesting and creative. This is your opportunity to show off the best sides of your personality, so use it!

These are our 3 reasons why you should be making a video C.V. At the end of the day, it comes down to what you feel comfortable doing with your application. The video C.V. is entirely your creation and therefore you can do as much or as little with it as you like. However, always remember that the point of using a video C.V. is that it is more impressive than a paper C.V. so it needs to be interesting and show you off as a candidate or else there wouldn’t be much point in having one! Why not practice a video C.V. and see if you think it would be right for you? Good luck!
